Who you calling a hustler?
What immediately comes to mind when you think about the hustle? Does it invoke images of fictional hustlers, such as Super Fly, The Mack, Nino Brown, O-Dog, Detective Alonzo Harris, Ghost, Tasha, Tariq, Tommy, Lucious, Ronnie, Stony, Cookie or Cleo? These hustlers are often portrayed as street-savvy pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers, extortionists, robbers, strippers, or con artists. They are slick, sly, and shady. Their business dealings consist of drug trafficking, prostitution, gambling, bribery, exhortation, and a whole lot of blood. Well, I think it’s safe to say that’s probably not the vibe we’re going for here! Ya’ think?
Instead, think more of real and fictional hustlers such as Madam C.J. Walker, Sheila Johnson, Issa Rae, Shaft, Tyler Perry, Olivia Pope, Daymond John, Kerry Washington, Michael Jordan, Byron Allen, Serena Williams, Robert F. Smith, Tracee Ellis Ross, Barrack, Michelle, Denzel, Janet, Lebron, Kendrick, Oprah, Beyonce, Rihanna, Zendaya, Viola, Coco, and Keke. They are strategic, spirited, and smart. These hustlers are street-savvy entrepreneurs, investors, lawyers, filmmakers, producers, fixers, directors, detectives, athletes, actors, singers, rappers, dancers, doctors, politicians, and philanthropists. These men and women, among many others, are changing the game, setting new standards, raising the bar, and making their mark. They’re out here breaking down barriers, pushing past limits, and reaching new heights with their unstoppable drive and creativity. Their journeys are hecka inspiring, showing us that with passion, hustle, and grind, you can make your entrepreneurial dreams a reality. Yeah, that’s the vibe we’re going for! You catching it?
Title goes here
Think about Oprah. The daughter of a teenage mother and experiences with poverty, abuse, and sexual molestation, Oprah went from local news anchor to global icon. She would find her calling in many ways, too numerous to mention, yet her influence on, well, just about everything, speaks to her status as one of the world’s most powerful and richest self made women on the planet.
Think about Misty Copeland. Experiencing poverty and homelessness as a child, she would go on to be the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), using her platform to break racial barriers and promote diversity and inclusion in the world of dance.
God didn’t just place a calling on women like Oprah, Misty, Sarah Jakes, Charlene, and many others. He placed one on you, too (Isaiah 49:1). And yes, the hustle IS a calling.
Times were hard—school, career, and family all pulling at me. I still don’t know how the Proverbs 31 woman managed it, and the fact that she didn’t even get a name? Just wild because girlfriend had it going on! Looking back, I know it was only God’s grace that carried me through.
My life was busy and full with chasing degrees, traveling for work, and grinding for the CPA exam - sometimes all three! I spent many days and nights watching over the affairs of my household, not sitting in idleness, hoping that my hustle and grind would provide many of the things I didn't have growing up. Hoping my children would rise up and call me blessed. Yeah, no, that didn't happen. The grind came with a cost, and trust, one I'm still paying for!
I poured everything into building a better future for my family, but I missed the moments that mattered most. Would I do it all over again?
Treating yourself to something as simple as a celebration dinner or a pair of red bottoms after closing a deal isn’t just about the reward. It’s about signaling to your brain, “We’re on the right track. Let’s keep going.” This creates momentum. Consistently celebrating your small wins helps you stay diligent and focused, knowing more blessings are around the corner. It’s not just about the material things but about the boost of confidence that comes with leveling up.
Building a rewards system is all about strategy and setting goals, marking clear milestones, and making sure you’re holding yourself accountable. A solid reward system keeps you hyped, supports a healthy work-life balance, and drives growth in both your business and personal life. At the heart, it’s about figuring out what truly brings you joy and keeps you motivated, even red bottoms. And remember, enjoying the fruits of your hard work isn’t just allowed—it’s the whole point!
Folks stay talking about the patience of Job, but I’m like—can we talk about the patience of Joseph though? Sheesh, homeboy went through a LOT, from the pit to Potiphar’s house; from the prison block to the palace, yet, through his fiscal and operational skills, Joseph successfully led Egypt through a famine. But before that, Joseph’s managerial skills and the call of God on his life, put him in charge of Potiphar's house, a high-ranking official. When he was later incarcerated, it was Joseph’s administrative and human resource skills that put him in charge of all the prisoners as the prison manager. His leadership skills led to his ascension to his most prominent role, in charge over the whole land of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. Joseph stood on business! Taking all that into account, and although I was mad that God interrupted my pity party, that still, quiet voice in me agreed with God that if He could protect and promote Joseph through the chaos and being forgotten, He could absolutely do the same for me! The next day, I resigned from my position at Nike.
And who can forget the Instagram Live Feed of the Brandy vs. Monica record-breaking Verzuz battle that, with a total of 6 million views, singlehandedly united a black community? For three whole hours, including the wait time (side-eye, lol), it was a family reunion where, in the privacy of our own homes, we sang-a-long, danced, reminisced about our favorite Brandy or Monica songs, and collectively shared a moment of black pride and solidarity during one of the world’s darkest hours.
I mean, how often do you get to rock with some of the biggest names in entertainment and politics in the comments section? And who got more excited than me to see then Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama (“Hey, girl, hey!”) all up in the comments?
Overall, these businesses--Instagram, Facebook, and Zoom--provided solutions that sustained human relationships, bridging gaps in communication and connection, especially during an extreme time of need.
Your mindset is shaped by your story—the wins, the wounds, and the lessons. This is often called your “grid.” Life’s been shaping your grid from day one and it later shows up in your relationships, communication style, disposition, view of life, how you show up in the world, and in your hustle. This is not all by chance and coincidence. You have authority over who you become and what you achieve. When your mindset is healed, focused, faith-fed, and Spirit-led, it shows up in your results.
Reflecting back on Michael Jordan and his journey from being cut from the varsity squad to becoming one of the greatest basketball players of all time. This setback inspired him to work harder; he made the varsity team the next year. As they say, the rest is history. No doubt it took a change in mindset to go from good to great and adopt the characteristics and qualities needed to become a 6x NBA champion, a 6x Finals MVP, a 5x NBA MVP, and a 14x NBA All-Star.
Building a business takes more than skills—it takes spiritual swagger, Kingdom confidence, and the kind of boldness that doesn’t flinch when the odds look stacked. Be like Mike.
